Man kicked dog after betting loss in Monaghan

A man who lost money in a betting shop and was observed kicking a dog as he emerged into the street, was ordered by a judge to pay the dog-owner €250 in compensation for his action.

Martin McElroy, aged 48, of 14 Ard na Lorgan, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, was prosecuted under the Cruelty to Animals Act in relation to the incident at West Street, Castleblayney, on July 15, 2015.

Garda Inspector Kevin Gavigan, Carrickmacross, told Judge Denis McLoughlin at Carrickmacross District Court, Co Monaghan, yesterday Mr McElroy was seen by a witness kicking the dog which was squealing at the door outside the shop after being left to wait on the footpath by its owner.
