GardaĂ at Mayorstone in Limerick are investigating the incident.

The attack happened at Pa Healy Rd on the northside of the city.

A group of youths had gathered by the side of the road and began to throw large stones and rocks at cars which were travelling on the road.

After one car was hit, it came to a stop and the driver got out.

Sgt Justin McCarthy said: “As he did so, he was confronted by the group, one of whom pulled a knife and stabbed the motorist in the back.”

Although wounded and in shock, the motorist managed to struggle back to his car and drove off before alerting gardaĂ to the incident.

The youths ran in different directions.

Luckily, the stab wound was not deep and the wounded motorist did not need to be hospitalised.

Sgt McCarthy said: “This was a cowardly assault with a knife on an innocent motorist and we would appeal to any witnesses to contact Mayorstone Garda Station on 061 456980.”

Meanwhile, a man has appeared at Limerick District Court in connection with attacks on a number of teenage students on their way to school.

The attacks were carried out near Athlunkard Boat Club as the victims were taking a much-used shortcut on their way to school.
