Deputy First Minister of the Stormont Assembly Martin McGuinness also attended, emphasising the all-island ethos of the party.

Speaking to a large crowd in the Gresham Hotel, Mr Adams said hospitals and health care would be a major issue which Sinn Féin would deliver on if elected.

He said: “Dublin hospitals, Beaumont, the Mater and St Vincent’s, are consistently amongst the worst in the State for emergency department overcrowding.

“Sinn Féin is the only party with a costed plan to deliver universal healthcare that treats citizen with the dignity and respect they deserve. Sinn Féin can and Sinn Féin will deliver for Dublin.”

Ms McDonald is running to retain her seat in the competitive constituency of Dublin Central which will drop from a four seat to three in the upcoming election.

It includes sitting ministers Paschal Donohoe and Joe Costello along with sitting Independent Maureen O’Sullivan.

The Sinn Féin Ard Comhairle is due to meet today to finalise electoral strategy for the coming general election.

However Mr Adams last night promised to abolish water charges “putting money back in the pockets of every household in Dublin”.
