Further rainfall due for weekend as Met Éireann issues status yellow rain warning

And flooding will be the number one item on the Cabinet agenda at next Tuesday’s meeting.

Environment Minister Alan Kelly is to bring a memo about the delivery of a national flood forecasting system, demanded by junior minister Simon Harris.

The National Emergency Coordination Group warned yesterday that rain in the south and south east will affect the catchments of the Munster Blackwater, the Suir, the Barrow, the Nore, and the Slaney.

Met Éireann issued a status yellow rain warning for Cork, Kerry, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Waterford, Tipperary, and Dublin.

Gerald Fleming of Met Éireann said plummeting temperatures in the coming days could see black ice spots form on water-logged roads which he said have the potential to be lethal.

Jim Casey from the OPW said water levels continued to increase along the Shannon and in the past 48 hours levels in the upper catchment had increased by 9cms.

The ESB increased the flow of water through the Parteen Weir from 440 cubic metres per second to 470 cubic metres per second.

Evacuation warning notices have been issued to some homes in Clonmel, Co Tipperary. Kilkenny County Council has advised that flash flooding is highly likely over the next 24 hours.

Mr Harris said the Department of Transport will report to Cabinet about damage to infrastructure and the Department of the Environment is due to report on flood forecasting and the damage across local authorities.

He said the Taoiseach had also called a meeting on Tuesday with all the agencies and Government departments with responsibility for the River Shannon.

In addition to the OPW’s flood management plan, which will be in place by the summer, the Taoiseach wants to find out what interim measures need to be taken, Mr Harris said.
