€500 fine for handling stolen scent worth €2k in Cork

While 25 bottles were stolen from Boots in Carrigaline on dates in March this year, the man accused of handling the stolen property, Abdelkader Abbada, was prepared to plead guilty yesterday to a charge amended to refer to the handling of 12 stolen bottles of aftershave, including Paco Rabanne and Gucci.

Frank Buttimer, defending, remarked that they were brands with which the prosecuting inspector would be very familiar. Inspector Bill Duane replied: “Not on my pay scale. I’d say Mr Buttimer would be more likely to use them.”

Mr Buttimer indicated that he did not use such fragrances.

Insp Duane said the aftershave went missing from Boots on Main St, Carrigaline, on March 28 and 29.

Mr Buttimer said Abbada, aged 44, of 6 Spring Rd, Riverway, Douglas, had been living in Ireland for 16 years, had no previous convictions, and was a decent man who was unemployed but carried out voluntary work in his religious community.

Judge Leo Malone fined him €500 on the charge of handling the stolen aftershave.
