The 25-year-old son of a woman found dead at her home in Cork City has officially been charged with murder.

Paul Horgan, of Murmont Ave, Montenotte, Cork, was arrested at his home on Monday morning following a disturbance.

He was taken to Mayfield Garda Station for questioning and detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Mr Horgan was officially charged with murder late last night and is due to appear before a sitting of Cork District Court this morning.

His mother, 60-year-old Marian Horgan, received fatal injuries during a violent incident at the family home at around 7.30am on Monday. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Her husband, Billy Horgan, was also seriously injured during the attack and received a number of stab wounds. He was brought to the Mercy Hospital in Cork and underwent emergency surgery.

The 68-year-old has since been discharged from hospital and is understood to be recovering with relatives in Cork City.
