Some sitting party TDs and senators are angered that new candidates, some of whom are not elected politicians, are being added to the ticket in their constituency. A senior party source said: “Our candidate selection is nearly complete, most of the heavy lifting has been done. This is going to annoy some sitting members obviously though who are already geared up.”

Mullingar councillor Peter Burke was last night added to Fine Gael’s election campaign in Longford-Westmeath, alongside sitting TDs Gabriel McFadden and James Bannon, who hail from Athlone and Longford respectively. The decision to run a third candidate is believed to have annoyed Mr Bannon.
