Head of IBRC inquiry wants second judge added to manage issues of conflict

Judge Brian Cregan, in his draft interim report, advises that the commission of investigation probing losses to the taxpayer from IBRC sales of state-owned assets could take several years to complete. The Irish Examiner understands he wants a second judge or member added to the inquiry.

“Given the conflicts of interest which will arise and the amount of transactions under investigation, the commission recommends that a second person should be appointed to the commission. This would mean that any conflicts of interest could be managed and that the work of the commission would be completed more quickly,” Judge Cregan says in the draft report.

The inquiry has come to a grinding halt after the judge last week told the Government it could not continue because of legal concerns over the use of documents.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said the Government will decide what to do when it gets the judge’s interim report.
