The capital is described as a location that “pulsates with youthful vibrancy”.
Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel publication named Dublin as its number three city to visit next year.
One of the reasons Dublin features on the list for next year is the €22m celebrations marking the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.
The city was also heralded for its youthful spirit.
“Over 40% of the population is estimated to be under 30 and the place pulsates with youthful vibrancy, optimism and creativity,” according to Lonely Planet.
“No longer a dirty auld town, Dublin has a healthy hue — with people embracing its inner green spaces and exploring the wild outdoor arenas along the coast and ’beyond the pale’.”
Apart from Dublin, Manchester in eighth place is the only other place in Ireland or Britain to make it onto the list.
It was praised for being “the UK’s cultural boomtown”.
“This one-time engine room of the industrial revolution has found a new groove for the 21st-century as a dynamo of culture and the arts,”
Welcoming the accolade, Fáilte Ireland’s head of Dublin, Orla Carroll, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Dublin — Lonely Planet is one of the premier sources of information for people all across the world when researching a holiday and lists like this will quite literally put Dublin, and Ireland, on the map and more importantly in the mind’s eye of thousands of potential visitors.
“More than that, it reinforces Dublin as a ‘must-visit’ destination which offers an incredible variety of experiences to its visitors.
Kotor in Montenegro took the number one spot because it offers a “picture-perfect visage from virtually every angle”.
The list was compiled by Lonely Planet’s experts based on exciting recent developments, destinations that have “a lot of buzz” and what special events are taking place next year.
The list is included in Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel 2016” which also includes the top 10 countries and regions to visit in 2016; 16 travel lists to give readers fresh ideas for exploring the world from a new perspective and more than 35 events mapped out by month in the 2016 travel planner.
