Gavin Ward, aged 26, attacked the patrol car after he was ejected from a nightclub while celebrating a friend’s birthday in Co Donegal.

He was ejected from Voodoo Nightclub in Letterkenny on March 22 and then walked across the street and headbutted the window of the patrol car at 2.30am.

He was arrested and taken to Letterkenny Garda station where he later apologised to gardaĂ.

Solicitor Kieran Dillon said his client’s memory of the events are very vague as he had been drinking.

He added that there was no damage to the vehicle and his client was prepared to make a donation to charity if the court wished.

Judge Alan Mitchell said that it was an unusual incident but would like to keep Ward, of Orbeg, Co Donegal, under Garda watch over the Christmas period.

“There is obviously an alcohol issue here and I want to make sure that the season of goodwill doesn’t come the season of too much,” he said.

He adjourned the case until January 11 to also allow Ward to pay €500 to St Vincent De Paul.
