However, he woke some time later on a couch downstairs with the young woman to find the gardaí asking them what they were doing.

Inspector Gary McPolin said the owner of the house at The Lough woke up in the early hours of July 11 to hear banging on his door downstairs. He remained upstairs and phoned the gardaí.

They arrived to find the couple asleep on a couch downstairs.

Defence solicitor, Shane Collins Daly, said the young Waterford graduate who was never in trouble in his life now accepted that he was trespassing on the night but had an innocent explanation for it — he thought it was the girl’s house.

“It was very, very stupid but it was a genuine mistake,” Mr Collins Daly said.

Judge Malone asked, “Is his lady friend before the court?” Inspector Gary McPolin confirmed that the young woman had been given the benefit of an adult caution from gardaí and was not prosecuted for her part in the trespass.

The judge said that he would leave the young man without a conviction if he made a €500 contribution to charity. He advised the young man, “You should be more careful of your choice of company, you could get yourself in serious trouble.”
