Mayor: Flog tree vandals with branches they broke

Vandals who damaged trees should be flogged with the branches they broke off, a town mayor has suggested.

The mayor of Letterkenny, Gerry McMonagle, reacted with fury after vandals tore branches off mature trees on the main road into Letterkenny, Co Donegal, over the weekend.

The route is popular with walkers, and the local council has spent years developing and tending to the trees.
