Road banter fills locals with interest in Clare

Clare County Council has engaged in a little spray-paint diplomacy – graffiti, as such – in an effort to improve local communications.

Road banter fills locals with interest in Clare

The local authority and an unknown member of the public were engaged in an impromptu conversation on the road, literally.

The conversation revolves around a pothole on a notoriously bad stretch of road between Kilfenora in north Clare and the nearby Catheir Mhic Neachtain stone fort.

One frustrated local decided to take actions into his or her own hand and used spray paint to mark a particularly deep pothole, painting a circle around the offending hole and writing the words ‘fill me’ beside it, as a gentle nudge to the council.

Not to be outdone, when the council repaired the road, a member of the repair team took the opportunity to reply to the concerned road user and spray-painted ‘done’ on the road beside the pothole.

According to Kilfenora hostel owner and publican Orla Vaughan, the spray paint banter created a lot of interest.

“We’ve had a lot of people coming in with pictures of the pothole. It’s causing a bit of a stir. It just shows you - we know how to get things done here in Kilfernora,” she said.

A spokesperson from Clare County Council explained the spray paint incident as an example of good customer service.

“Customer service is always our priority but unfortunately in this instance the original complainant did not leave any contact details so we replied in similar fashion to their original complaint.”
