Tánaiste Joan Burton has warned revelations the Provisional IRA is involved in criminality despite moving away from linked paramilitary acts is an “insidious threat” to the peace process that offers its victims no closure.

Ms Burton made the claim as the North’s secretary of state Theresa Villiers said last Friday’s claim from PSNI chief constable George Hamilton was of no surprise to the British government and political rivals rounded on Sinn Féin to come clean on the scandal.

Speaking as the escalating controversy over who was behind the murder of Kevin McGuigan in Belfast on August 12 and Gerard ‘Jock’ Davison earlier this year continued, political rivals repeatedly lashed Sinn Féin over what power the supposedly non-existent organisation still wields.
