The Donegal singer will join celebrities including pop star Peter Andre, chef Ainsley Harriott, and EastEnders star Kellie Bright in the dance-offs.

The series, now heading into its 13th season, begins on BBC One next month.

Daniel, who has taken a break from touring this year following wife Majella’s cancer battle, said he is looking forward to taking part in the show.

“I’m very nervous but I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “It’ll be a different kind of hard work but I think I’ll enjoy it.”

Daniel said while he has danced a lot, his timing would not be the best.

“Just don’t ask me to be in a certain place at a certain time,” he said. “This is going to be very challenging. I’ll be very hard to tie down. God help whoever gets me.”

Daniel said he is looking forward to meeting the competitors as he’s a big fan of such shows as EastEnders and Coronation Street.

“I would never have got to meet the people only for the show so I am really looking forward to it,” he said.

He said that he’s excited to see what costumes he’ll be sporting, but added: “I hope they don’t ask me to open my shirt as I only have a one-pack.”

Majella took part in last year’s show and it is understood that she encouraged the singer to give the show a try this year.

Jennifer Gibney, star of Mrs Brown’s Boys and wife of Brendan O’Carroll, took part in the show last year

Daniel O’Donnell is already a household name in Britain but his appearance on Strictly promises to make him even more popular.

Both he and Majella have just finished filming a series for UTV, which sees them visiting B&Bs around the country.
