Fianna Fáil commits to rent cap and supplement rise

In a policy document to be published today, Fianna Fáil will commit to raising the rent supplement, publish plans for a cap on the rents which landlords can demand, and outline new measures to “dramatically” improve the quality of properties available.

Fianna Fáil will launch the proposals — which also include moves to make renting more secure and encourage landlords to invest in homes — amid criticism of Environment Minister Alan Kelly’s plans to address issues in the sector.

Speaking before the launch of the ‘Generation rent: a new deal for renters and landlords’ document this morning, Fianna Fáil environment spokesman Barry Cowen said the proposals are needed to help give people who unable to afford a home security in where they live.
