€10k reward offered for information on dog killer

An animal rights group has offered a further €5,000 reward for any information on the brutal stabbing and killing of a pet dog in Cork City.

€10k reward offered for information on dog killer

John Carmody, of the Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN), put up the reward yesterday as revulsion spread following the horrific attack on Marvin, a 5-year-old Jack Russell, in the Mayfield area at the weekend.

“It must be accurate information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible,” he said.

ARAN’s gesture now brings to almost €10,000 the amount of reward money pledged for information which leads to the identification, arrest, and conviction of those responsible for the appalling attack.

The Lord Mayor of Cork City, Cllr Chris O’Leary, pledged €200 to a fund set up by The Neil Prendeville Show on RedFM, which has now passed the €5,000 mark.

Gardaí are still investigating Saturday’s attack in which Marvin’s throat was sliced open, and an attempt was made to cut off one of the dog’s hind legs. He was dumped in a ditch in the Ballinderry Park area and left to die. Gardaí were alerted and they brought the seriously-injured pet to vets in Blackpool where he later died.

Marvin’s owner Sylvia McCarthy said she and her children, Chelsea, 19, Zack, 13, Abby, 12, and Keeley, 7, are devastated. “I won’t rest until we find out who did this to Marvin and they are brought to justice,” she said.

Mr Carmody said such extreme cases of animal cruelty are becoming all too familiar. “What we often see is that offenders get a slap on the wrist, or a few hours of community service,” he said.

“The deterrent isn’t strong enough. We need to see people responsible for such appalling cases of animal cruelty arrested, brought before the court, and have the book thrown at them.”
