Youghal grans battle for ‘most glamorous’ title

The contest is part of Youghal’s annual Mackerel Festival. Over three nights, starting tonight, the grandmothers will sing, recite a poem, or display their hidden talents, but while “personality counts, the emphasis is unashamedly on glamour”, says MC, Jim Flanagan, chairman of Youghal 4 All festival group. The winner will receive €250.
However, silver-streaked creatures of the marine will dominate the weekend. In a town more traditionally associated with the great whale, Moby Dick, the appetising aroma of mackerel — grilled, marinated, cooked, boiled, barbecued, baked, spiced, and reinvented — will permeate the town centre, with free samples to be enjoyed. A wide variety of music and family entertainment will also take place.
