He had earlier been released without charge.

It has now emerged that the man, who is aged in his 20s, is now being held by gardaí in connection with another attack on an elderly man, in which the victim was mugged and cash taken from him.

The woman, who was attacked last Sunday night as she entered her home in Limerick, was still in a critical condition in the high dependency unit of University Hospital Limerick yesterday where she is being treated for a broken pelvis and head injuries.

The woman had just got out of a taxi after attending bingo. As she walked towards the front door of the house where she lives with her husband, a man jumped on her, knocking her to the ground.

As the woman tried to hold on to her handbag, her assailant dragged her out into the front garden before making off with €20 which he took from the woman’s purse.

Family members are now caring for the woman’s husband who, while active, has restricted movement.

The family have asked for privacy as they cope with the attack which has caused nationwide revulsion.

A man arrested in connection with the attack was released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

However, in a further development since the man’s release, he was rearrested and is now in custody as an investigation continues into another attack on an elderly man.
