However, Emily Clarkson, daughter of former Top Gear presenter Jeremy, has found herself at the centre of a campaign of vitriolic online trolling simply because she chose to make a harmless joke at the expense of her father.

On July 30, Clarkson announced that he and former Top Gear colleagues Richard Hammond and James May were to front a new car show on Amazon Prime.

Emily posted a picture of her father with the message: “So, is he going to be delivering my parcels then?”

Mail Online picked up on the tweet and ran a story which then covered all the controversies that surrounded Clarkson during his tenure on Top Gear.

Dailymail.co.uk also ran a picture of Emily standing beside what appears to be a Ferrari. It was this picture that the trolls seized upon and referenced in dozens of vicious postings in the website’s comments section.

Among the many comments about the 20-year-old were: “She is ugly like her disgusting father”; “Hmm... She’s a bit of a heffer [sic]”; “She looks like a skank”; “He’ll be able to deliver her diet pills”; “Fatty boom boom alert”; “36,000 followers? Wow. Either they are down to dad’s antics, or she has another talent, like running a chubster club.”

However, rather than take the comments lying down, Emily posted a powerful video on YouTube both telling the background to the picture but, more importantly, highlighting the ugly remarks.

The footage begins with a picture of her now along with the words: “I work hard. I love my family. I love my friends. I run a happiness blog I am a happy person. I do NOT own a Ferrari.”

She then references the photograph used in the article, saying it was taken four years ago.

“I hate this photo,” she writes. “I didn’t know I was going to be photographed. I was 17. I had not spent the day in hair and make-up. Why would I?

“And this is what you had to say”, before running more than three minutes of footage of the posts about her in the paper’s comment section.

“This hurts” she then writes.

“I am a daughter. I am a sister. I am a friend. I am a human. And so are you. And so, from one human to another, I implore you to think before you write. I implore you to think about the pain you cause. I implore you to be kind.”

Jeremy Clarkson posted a link to the video with the message: “@MailOnline You should watch this. And then you should think about allowing unmoderated replies to your ‘stories’.”
