Irish Naval personnel who have rescued over 3,400 migrants in the Mediterranean are not getting proper pay allowances.

The association representing the Defence Forces’ enlisted personnel is taking the Department of Defence to arbitration, claiming it refused to give the crew of LÉ Eithne full allowances during their migrant rescue mission.

PDFORRA (Permanent Defence Forces Other Ranks’ Representative Association) – which represents nearly 7,000 members – said the crew was entitled to an extra €80 per day under the terms of the Overseas Peace Support Allowance (OPSA).
