VIDEO: Live at the Marquee: Coronas rule in Cork yet again

Had Ireland passed the referendum to allow for the election of a 20-something president, it would be hard to imagine a more popular youth candidate than Danny O’Reilly.

The Marquee was jam- packed, thronging with fans, mostly in the 16-25s category, jostling for pole position long before the 9pm-sharp arrival onstage of The Coronas for their latest emotionally charged, epic, and superlative- defying journey into the deep south.

“It feels fantastic to be here in Cork tonight for the first of two sold-out shows,” says Danny, catching a breath from the set’s blistering opening numbers.

‘This is our fifth year in a row to play here. When we see our name in these line-ups we really can’t believe it. This really is our favourite venue, our favourite venue in the world I’d say.”

Right from the off, the fans connect with both Danny’s honest charm and with a collection of truly great songs.

The crowd chanted the lyrics upon command. It started with latest hit ‘Just Like That’, and they repeated the charm repeatedly through the hit-filled show. ‘Addicted To Progress’ ripped the roof off, or at least popped a few tent pegs.

Latest single ‘Get Loose’, from the album The Long Way, sits well with the established hits, and the subject strikes an instant resonance with this crowd.

Of ‘Get Loose’, Danny said: “We wrote this song about two friends of ours, who are always pushing you to have one more drink. People who are never too far from trouble but you love them anyway because that’s what friends are about.”

Then a snippet of ‘The Lakes of Ponchtrain’ easing into more call-and-response, with the crowd chanting ‘You Wouldn’t Dream To Dream of Anything Else’.

What a show.

But ‘show’ is too small a word. ‘Happening’ is too ’60s, and too character wasteful to tweet.

Let’s just call it a Coronation, a summer honour bestowed upon the people of Cork by The Coronas, the Marquee’s newly crowned kings of emotion.

Respect also to warm-up acts Roisin O and Ham Sandwich, who both connected with this most joyful audience.
