Pressure to enact new laws on sale of sex
It comes as members of the Turn Off the Red Light campaign, who are calling for new laws targeting those who buy sex, are poised to ramp up pressure on the Government to publish new legislation before the Dáil’s summer recess.
They have invited Det Sgt Jonas Henriksson of the national task force against prostitution and human trafficking, to explain how Sweden’s new sex buyer laws are working, and how the laws have reduced demand for sex-trafficking.
Det Sgt Henriksson will meet members of the Immigrant Council of Ireland and Nasc in Cork on Monday.
He has been working full-time in the prostitution unit since 2013 whose main focus is to fight trafficking by eliminating the demand for sexual services, using the Swedish sex purchase law.
He spends most of his working hours on the streets, in sex clubs, hotels or apartments arresting pimps or sex buyers and identifying victims of prostitution and trafficking.
His unit also tracks down minors who are being exploited in prostitution.
“By combating the demand for sexual services it is possible to make a real difference in the fight against human trafficking in men, women and children,” said Det Sgt Henriksson.
