Joe Brolly remark ‘crossed the line’ says Marty Morrissey
The Sunday Game pundit made the remarks a number of weeks ago when he compared Mr Morrissey to the defensive style of football employed by Cavan in their game against Monaghan.
“I’ve referred to Cavan in recent years as the Black Death because the football has been as some people have said, as ugly as Marty Morrissey,” he said.
Mr Brolly later apologised on air, while RTÉ group head of sport Ryle Nugent said he had spoken to the pundit about his comments, which he called “both inappropriate and extremely hurtful”.
“I have spoken with Joe Brolly about the comments he made in relation to RTÉ Sport’s GAA correspondent and commentator Marty Morrissey on last weekend’s Sunday Game Live broadcast,” said Mr Nugent.
Yesterday, Mr Morrissey broke his silence on the affair, saying he had been on his way to Semple Stadium in Thurles when the RTÉ press office contacted him about the incident.
“My phone started lighting up, and my good friend and colleague here in the press office, Maureen Catterson, texted me and then rang me and told me what had happened,” he said. “Obviously, it snowballed over all of last week and put us on the front pages of various media outlets and it was very much a talking point.”
Mr Morrisey said that the comment “disappointed” him but he was happy with how RTÉ dealt with the matter.
“I’ve known Joe for a long time, obviously, and have worked with him on The Sunday Game and other programmes,” he said. “I was disappointed but to be honest Joe has apologised which I have accepted.”
Mr Morrissey said Mr Brolly’s comments were different from impressionists such as Oliver Callan and Mario Rosenstock, as they operated within certain parameters and did not cross the line when mimicking him.
“It crossed the line and it disappointed me,” he said.
