Jack and Emily still top of the list for baby names, CSO reveals

Jack and Emily retained their positions as the top baby names in Ireland last year.

According to the CSO, Jack has been the most common boy’s name since 2007 and Emily has topped the list for girls since 2011.

The other names in the top five for boys were James, Daniel, Conor, and Seán.

For girls the other four were Sophie, Emma, Grace, and Ava.

There were four first-time entries to the top 100 for boys: Henry, Hugo, Ollie, and Luca, while there were two first-time entrants to the top 100 for girls: Annie and Isla.

Meanwhile, the HSE has welcomed news of a further decline in the number of births to teenagers, from 1,381 in 2013 to 1,253 in 2014.

Since the establishment of the HSE Crisis Pregnancy Programme (formerly the Crisis Pregnancy Agency) in 2001, the total number of births to teenagers has decreased from 3,087 in 2001 to 1,253 in 2014 — a decline of 60% over 13 years.

This equates to a decrease in the teenage birth rate from 20 per 1,000 of women aged 15 to 19 in the population in Ireland in 2001 to 9.3 per 1,000 of women aged 15 to 19 in the population in 2014.
