Man ‘fractured student’s skull with machete’

A man facing a robbery charge was remanded in custody for a fortnight yesterday in a case where a young American had her skull fractured by a man who allegedly walked up behind her and swung a 2ft machete at her head before robbing her.

Inspe Eileen Foster said at Cork District Court yesterday that directions were not yet available from the DPP in the case, which dates back to February 26.

Brian Veale, aged 30, with an address at Dominic St near Shandon in Cork City and originally from Dungarvan, Co Waterford, has been in custody in relation to this robbery charge and another attempted robbery charge on the same date.
