Sporting personality Arthur Spring dies
Dr Spring was born in Tralee in April 1945, the eldest son of the famous Kerry All-Ireland football winning captain and long-time Labour TD, Dan Spring.
He won an All-Ireland medal with Kerry in 1963. However, on moving to UCC to study medicine, golf became his first love, although he later played with Kerins/O’Rahillys alongside his international rugby playing brothers, Donal and Dick.
Dr Spring built a general practice in Tralee, while also earning his place on the Munster golf team. He won a Barton Shield medal with Killarney in 1980.
On reaching his 50th birthday in 1995, he turned professional and two years later gained his card on the European Seniors Tour. That in turn enabled him launch Spring Golf Design. He designed a large number of courses including Beaufort, Castlegregory, Castleisland, Kenmare and Parknasilla in his native county as well as Cavan , Clones, Roscrea, Woodstock, Craddockstown, Cregmore Park, East Clare, Kilrush and Newcastle West.
His son Graham played golf for Ireland in the Home International Championship and another son, Arthur, was elected a TD in 2011. He is also survived by his son John and daughter Julianne.
