Two men remanded in custody over iron bar attack

At Cork District Court yesterday, Jamie O’Brien, aged 19, of 23 Meadow Hills, the Meadows, Hollyhill, Cork, and Eddie Murphy, age 25, of 57 Kilmore Road, Knocknaheeny, Cork, were charged over the attack on the 38-year-old man.

Mr Murphy and Mr O’Brien were both charged with assault causing harm to Mark Lahive at Exchange Business Park, John F Connolly Road, Churchfield, Cork, on April 28.

Mr Lahive, a father-of-two who works in a confectionery business, remains in an induced coma at Cork University Hospital after undergoing surgery to reduce swelling to his brain.

Det Garda Gary Purtill gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in relation to Mr Murphy and told the court that Mr Murphy made no reply when charged.

Det Garda Alan Johnson gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in relation to Mr O’Brien and he told the court Mr O’Brien also made no reply to the charge.

Defence solicitors, Donal Daly for Mr Murphy and Diarmuid Kelleher for Mr O’Brien told Judge Con O’Leary their clients were not applying for bail.

Inspector Gary McPolin said the matter was still under investigation and gardaí had not received the DPP’s directions. He applied to have both men remanded in custody until May 7.

Judge O’Leary remanded both to appear again on that date.

He granted the two unemployed men free legal aid.
