A forty-year-old Munster man has died in a freak accident on a construction site in the US.

Trevor Loftus, from Pallaskenry, Co Limerick, died after a crane arm collapsed at a work site in New York City.

It is understood he was unloading materials from a truck when the accident occurred and became pinned under the malfunctioning arm of the boom crane.

The incident occurred at around 11.40am local time (4.40pm Irish time) at 219 East 44th Street in midtown Manhattan.

Firefighters attempted to save the man’s life, but were unsuccessful.

The New York Police Department said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Loftus was working as the construction safety coordinator on the site.

He also served as the crane safety coordinator for Kenry Contracting of Yonkers - Loftus was the company’s owner.

The husband and father-of-two is also listed as the director of Kenry House Enterprises, registered at Miltown, Croagh, Co Limerick, which also trades as Neville’s pub – a restaurant in Adare.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said the department is aware of the case and “ready to provide consular assistance”.
