Siblings hurt in car rally crash

A seven-year-old girl was airlifted to Cork University Hospital, while a two-year-old boy was taken to Kerry General Hospital, Tralee, after the incident which occurred in the Ballymacelligott area, near Tralee, at around 11.30am.
The girl sustained leg injuries, but it is understood the children’s injuries are not life-threatening. A number of adult spectators were also injured, though none seriously, it is believed.

The incident happened during the Circuit of Kerry rally when a competing car went out of control and crashed into a barrier.
A handful of cars had completed the second stage of the rally and the remainder of the stage was cancelled as a result of the incident. The cars were diverted back to Tralee while emergency services rushed to the scene.
Valentia Coastguard, which coordinated the airlift, received a call for assistance at 12pm that a helicopter might be required.
The Shannon-based helicopter was tasked and was at the scene in just over 30 minutes, reaching CUH shortly after 1pm.
More than 100 cars were in the rally which started in Tralee, on Saturday night.
The event has been held for the past 41 years and takes in some of Kerry’s classic rally routes.
