Infrastructure projects to begin in West Cork

Millions of euro worth of projects, which are the legacy of two former town councils in West Cork, are about to get under way.

Infrastructure projects to begin in West Cork

Clonakilty Town Council invested a large part of its resources in two major schemes for the town.

Work on the €2.4m town drainage and road resurfacing scheme is to get underway on April 14 and should be completed by April 28, 2016.

A storm water collection scheme and pump station with outfall into the bay will be developed at Faxbridge, along with upgrading of the foul sewer.

A public information meeting on these schemes will be held at O’Donovan’s Hotel tonight from 5pm to 8pm.

Meanwhile, the council provided €1m for the upgrade of the town’s sewerage treatment plant. Council officials said they envisaged this project would be completed in June.

Skibbereen can also look forward to a number of enhancement schemes which were kickstarted by its former town council.

Close to €900,000 was set aside to improve the public realm areas in the town centre, most of which will start when the town’s flood relief scheme is completed.

The county council’s divisional manager James Fogarty is to give an outline of the project and timescale to councillors at a meeting next month.

The former town council also set aside money for refurbishment of the Town Hall and gave a sizable donation to the Friends of O’Donovan Rossa for a park dedicated to the Fenian leader. It will open in June.
