Man receives head injuries after drug gangs fracas
The man was one of two people who launched a knife attack on three others at the Milltown stop just before 8pm on Sunday.
One of the victims of the knife attack received 28 stitches, while a Luas security staff also received a stab wound. A second security staff suffered an injury, thought to be a broken thumb.
Garda sources said the violence was connected to an “ongoing feud over drug territory” between two gangs with addresses in Rathmines, Crumlin and Tallaght. The feud is over the sale of drugs on the Luas Green Line.
Gardaí are examining CCTV footage at the Milltown stop, which captured some of the violence.
In a further development yesterday, the Garda Ombudsman was called in after one of the two people arrested became unwell while in Garda custody.
When he was brought back to hospital it was found his brain had swelled from a kicking he received. He was later described as being in a “very serious condition” in Beaumont Hospital, the country’s specialist head injury hospital.
Sources said the incident began when two men, armed with knives, attacked three members of a rival gang at Milltown stop. They inflicted serious knife wounds on one of them, a man from Rathmines who is known to gardaí. The two associates of the knife victim jumped on the attackers and kicked them a number of times, including to the head.
Two security staff intervened and suffered injuries. However, they managed to hold on to the attackers as the gardaí arrived.
One of the attackers was taken to Rathmines Garda Station, while the second was taken to St James’s Hospital.
The second attacker was then brought to Terenure Garda Station, but became unwell overnight. He was brought back to St James’s, but was transferred to the specialist head injury unit at Beaumont Hospital.
“His brain swelled from the kicking he got,” said one source. “He has very serious head injuries.”
