Hillwalkers using Ireland’s highest mountain are to be asked to put money in an ‘honesty box’ when they park their cars.

Moves to introduce a pay-and-display system at car parks on access points to Carrantuohill to help pay for repairs to paths on the mountain have been resisted by Kerry County Council officials.

Upwards of 100,000 people go onto the MacGillycuddy Reeks, of which Carrantuohill is the centrepiece, each year and some of the most frequented paths and trails are in need of maintenance.
