Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s family urges DPP to bring her killer to justice
Georges and Marguerite Bouniol spoke out last night after Ian Bailey lost his High Court civil case for conspiracy against An Garda Síochána and the State.
Sophie’s parents described the verdict as “excellent news” but said they were angry that Mr Bailey had been portrayed as the victim during the case, when they said, in fact, it was their daughter who is the real victim.
“It is Sophie and us, her family, that have suffered a double penalty over last 18 years,” they said.
“We have lost our daughter and are still waiting to see her killer brought to justice. It is us, and her family, who are the victims of serious malfunctions in the Irish police and judicial systems.”
The French group which is campaigning for justice for Sophie also backed their calls.
Jean-Antoine Bloc, the vice president of the Association for the Truth about the Murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier, said the DPP should reconsider its position in relation to the Garda investigation.
He said new material has emerged — during Mr Bailey’s 2003 libel trial and again during the course of his failed High Court case — which should be examined and considered by the DPP again.
He also pointed to Mr Justice Hedigan’s decision to refer a transcript of Marie Farrell’s evidence in Mr Bailey’s failed civil case to the DPP.
He said the French investigation into Sophie’s death, which is being led from Paris by French magistrate Patrick Gachon and which had been delayed by Mr Bailey’s civil case, is still active and should be concluded by the end of the year.
