As University Hospital Limerick went on red alert yesterday with another spike in emergency eepartment (ED) trolley patients, all non-urgent elective surgery was cancelled.

Surgical procedures scheduled for coming days are being reviewed. In a move to free up beds as 55 trolley-patients crammed ED, some were transferred to St John’s Hospital, as well as Nenagh and Ennis.

An assistant director of community care was also assigned yesterday to get some patients into community care facilities.
