The chief executive of Cork County Council has said “a limited number” of the 18 landbanks bought by the local authority for €28.3m can be used to develop social housing.

Tim Lucey said council officials who purchased the land between 2000-2006 were acting to ensure there would be adequate land available for social housing.

But money to build the homes dried up during the recession.
