GAA launches initiative to beat stress

A stress control course aimed at empowering people to recognise and reduce stress in their lives will take place at Youghal GAA.

GAA launches initiative to beat stress

Cork Beats Stress, in conjunction with the HSE and the local Community Health Project, will run at Club Áras GAA club, Magner’s Hill for six consecutive Tuesday mornings.

The programme has already proved successful in Midleton and St Finbarr’s GAA clubs.

HSE South psychologist Jennifer Hayes devised the course based on the work of clinical psychologist Jim White in Scotland.

“The format removes any stigma or pressure on those who attend,” said Dr Hayes. “Participants are not engaged individually, will not be asked to address personal issues and there are no Q & A sessions.”

Participants are also provided with a booklet and CD for home consultation.

Youghal Community Health co-ordinator Nicola Lucey, initiated the course after discerning a “repeated need” for stress control mechanisms. It coincides with a considerable increase in suicides in the Youghal region in recent years.
