Leo Varadkar: response ‘really great’

Health Minister Leo Varadkar has had such a positive response to his coming out he wonders why he did not go public with his sexuality earlier.

Ireland’s first ‘out’ Cabinet minister said he made the decision so nobody could accuse him of having a hidden agenda in Government.

“It was very much a personal decision, because there are a number of policy issues coming up. Issues around blood transfusion, surrogacy. I didn’t want anyone to think or suggest I had some form of hidden agendas. The response from people has been really great, very encouraging, and I’m very grateful for that. I wonder why I didn’t do it sooner, but I’m a very private person,” Mr Varadkar told RTÉ.
