An Post insists the controversial decision to close the post office in Cappataggle, Co Galway, stands and that it will shut down tomorrow.

Post office to close tomorrow despite hunger strike to retain it

Community activist Michael Kilgannon, 74, was enduring the third day of his hunger strike yesterday in nearby Ballinasloe in protest at the decision.

The retired schoolteacher vowed the hunger strike would continue, and that others would be ready to take his place and continue the strike by the end of this week, if there was no change in the An Post decision.

But An Post spokesman insisted the decision to close the east Galway post office had followed a process of consultation and that the closure would go ahead. The spokesman declined to comment on the continuing hunger strike by Mr Kilgannon.

The father of six adult children has refused food since last Saturday in a bid to highlight the campaign to retain the office.

Cappataggle is one of a number of rural post offices facing closure.

The decision has led to the formation of the Post Office Users Association to campaign for the survival of post offices in rural Ireland.
