Gardaí in Clare were last night questioning a 24-year-old man following the seizure of almost €700,000 worth of cannabis.

Around 34kgs of cannabis herb was discovered at a property in Querrin near Kilkee in West Clare early yesterday.

The man was taken to Kilrush Garda Station where he was being detained under section 2 of the Criminal Justice Drug Trafficking act.

Detective Inspector John Galvin confirmed cannabis herb, with an estimated street value of €680,000, was discovered during a search carried out as part of an ongoing operation by gardaí into the sale and supply of drugs.

Gardaí have carried out several searches in West Clare in recent weeks and this the second substantial seizure in eight days.

Last weekend, an 18-year-old man was brought before a special sitting of the district court following a seizure of cannabis with an estimated street value of €70,000.

Ronan Carroll, of Cahermore, Cree, Co Clare, was arrested at Beechpark, Ennis when gardaí stopped a car. He was granted bail and is due to appear before the court next month.
