The girl was flung into the air when she was struck by a dark-coloured van, landing on the bonnet.

It is understood the girl was on the bonnet for up to 10m and that the driver kept going until she fell off. She slipped underneath the vehicle and one of her legs was crushed.

She was on the road with her mother at a pedestrian crossing on the Malahide Road in north Dublin at 7.45pm on Wednesday when the horror unfolded.

It is understood the pedestrian light was green at the time and gardaí are endeavouring to confirm that.

“The girl suffered serious breaks to her leg, as well as some internal injuries and cuts and bruises to her head,” a source said.

“But it could have been even worse.”

The girl was rushed to Temple Street Children’s Hospital in the city centre, accompanied by her traumatised mother.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Templemore, Co Tipperary, are investigating a fatal road traffic collision at Cloone Cross, Templemore, at around midday on Wednesday.

A car and a motorcycle were in collision at the location.

The male motorcyclist, aged in his 70s, received serious injuries and was taken to University Hospital in Limerick.

He was pronounced dead on Wednesday night.
