Clonakilty to name street after black pudding firm boss
Next Friday, the Clonakilty street formerly known as Bridge Street — it runs from the AIB corner to the Post Office Bridge — will be formally unveiled as Edward Twomey Street, by his wife Colette, who is now mayor of the town.
Edward Twomey, who died several years ago at the age of 54, had a passion for his product which saw it become a household name across the globe.
Several months ago, before the scrapping of the town council system, then town councillor and local businessman Kevin O’Regan put forward a motion at a Clonakilty town council meeting to have Bridge Street re-named in honour of the West Cork entrepreneur.
The motion gained unanimous support and work began on the process to display a special plaque naming the busy thoroughfare after the man who became Ireland’s most renowned butcher.
It will be officially unveiled by Colette Twomey on Friday morning.
“I put forward the proposal several months ago because I felt there was a need for recognition of what Edward Twomey and the company he had founded had done for Clonakilty,” said Mr O’Regan, who runs Fuschia Footwear shop.
“We simply want to commemorate the lasting legacy he left to the town.
“It doesn’t matter what corner of the world you go to, when you mention Clonakilty someone will always say the words ‘black pudding!”
“Edward’s passion for the brand and the work he put into it has helped to contribute to the success of this town,” he said, pointing to the fact that the company’s new headquarters and interpretative centre is moving to West Cork — a state-of-the-art facility is due to be constructed at the western end of Clonakilty.
The green-and-cream name plate spelling out the words Edward Twomey Street, is already in place behind the Michael Collins statue in the town, and will be unveiled on Friday at 11.30 am in a special ceremony organised by Clonakilty’s Mayoral Committee.
