‘A lot of damage’ prevented by €45k heroin seizure

Gardaí have made one of the biggest heroin seizures in Cork this year, which they say “would have done a lot of damage”.

‘A lot of damage’ prevented by €45k heroin seizure

A senior Garda source said members of the Cork City Garda Division’s dedicated heroin unit saw a woman acting suspiciously in the Sunday’s Well area of the city on Thursday.

The gardaí stopped and searched the woman, who is aged 30, at the Rope Walk area and discovered she was concealing a quarter of a kilo of heroin, with a street value of about €45,000.

She was being detained yesterday under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act at Gurranabraher Garda Station.

Under that legislation, she can be detained for up to seven days.

The use of heroin has mushroomed in the city in recent years and it is estimated that there are now around 500 people in Cork using the class A drug. Ten years ago it was estimated there were only about 20 heroin users in the city.

Gardaí say the rise in heroin use has led to an increase in muggings and opportunist thefts in the city centre as users need to get money to feed their habit.

The price of heroin has dropped and production in Afghanistan is increasing, despite the heavy presence of military forces there.

This has led to a rise in its use worldwide.

“This is a very significant seizure for a city the size of Cork. We generally find smaller deals on people. Around 10 to 15 deals would typically amount to 15g, whereas this seizure was a quarter of a kilo,” the garda source said.
