Cork businessman stabbed during home burglary

Gardaí in Cork have recovered the weapon which they believe was used in the stabbing of a businessman who disturbed a burglar in his home.

Kevin Cummins, 68, a director of the well-known Cummins Sports business, was discharged from Cork University Hospital yesterday after treatment for a stab wound which he sustained in the incident in his home on the Cross Douglas Road on Wednesday.

Detectives spoke to Mr Cummins yesterday, but he was described last night as still deeply shocked and traumatised. Gardaí hope that the weapon used in the incident will yield vital forensic evidence.

Mr Cummins arrived home on Wednesday afternoon around 4.30pm and opened his front door to be confronted by a raider on the stairs of his home.

The raider charged at him and, as he tried to flee through the front door, Mr Cummins was knocked unconscious.

The businessman, who sustained a head injury and a half-inch stab wound to his side, fell to the ground. He does not know how long he was unconscious but he was able to raise the alarm when he came round. The raider made off with a computer and camera equipment.

Gardaí have conducted door-to-door inquiries in the area and are currently trawling through CCTV footage.

They renewed their appeal last night for anyone who saw anyone or anything suspicious in the general Cross Douglas Road area between 3.45pm and 4.45pm on Wednesday, or for anyone with information in relation to the incident, to come forward.

Mr Cummins is a member of one of Ireland’s best-known GAA families. One brother, Ray, was a dual star named on the GAA hurling team of the decade, and another brother, Brendan, also won an All-Ireland medal with Cork.
