Island Kingdom: Kerry to seek status change
Cllr Michael Gleeson’s suggestion that the county, normally known as the Kingdom, should be declared an island because of access to it, has received unanimous support.
He said two bypasses to enter the county had been put on hold for years. One was at Adare, Co Limerick, where motorists now were experiencing hours of delays, and the other was at Macroom in Co Cork.
The effect of having to sit in cars for hours stuck in traffic and being bounced around bad roads was that no investor would come to Kerry and tourists and Kerry people were not being treated with dignity and respect, he said.
“The Adare bypass had been approved by the NRA but was shut down by An Bord Pleanála. Only €4m has been approved for the Macroom bypass — but how can you have half a bypass?” the councillor asked.
He said the council should make representations to the EU on the matter of access and hold ups to roads.
“Kerry should seek island status — at least then we would have access to grant aid and special funding.”
His motion was seconded by Fianna Fail councillor Niall Kelleher and supported unanimously.
