Two questioned over shooting in Dublin

Gardaí are continuing to question a man and a woman in relation to a gruesome shooting in Dublin’s north inner city on Sunday night, which may be linked to an 11-hour crime spree.

Two questioned over shooting in Dublin

The victim, who has yet to be identified due to the severity of his injuries, was killed after being shot at close range in the head and upper body with a shotgun near the Killarney Court flat complex on Empress Place, Buckingham St, just before 12pm.

Detectives were last night trying to uncover a motive for the shooting.

However, they believe the incident may be linked to two other assaults in the same area on the night.

Officers are questioning a 31-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman. The man is being detained at Mountjoy Garda Station in connection with the armed robbery of a taxi driver at 7pm on Sunday near Terrace Place, and a later attack on a homeless man, aged 55, at 6am on Monday.

The victim of the taxi robbery picked up a fare in Finglas before driving to the city centre, at which point his passenger took out a sawn-off shotgun and told the driver to hand over a significant sum of money.

In the second incident, which also occurred in the Dublin 1 area, a homeless man was assaulted. He is recovering at the Mater Hospital.

While officers have yet to confirm a link between the attacks and the shooting, it is understood they are also questioning the man arrested over the taxi robbery in relation to the incident.

The 20-year-old woman, who is being questioned at Store St Garda Station, is being held on suspicion of withholding information over the shooting.

The shooting is the thirteenth gun-related death in Ireland so far this year, and the 10th to occur in Dublin since December.

The scene of the shooting at Empress Place was yesterday cornered off as the Garda forensics team attempted to uncover what happened.

The body has been removed to Dublin city morgue, where an autopsy was due to take place last night.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Garda confidential phone number on 1800 666 111.
