An expert group established to recommend how the Government should proceed with promised laws to grant medical cards based on medical needs has not provided a solution, according to the health minister

Leo Varadkar said he needed time to consider the report, which was ordered by his predecessor, James Reilly, following a public outcry over the removal of thousands of cards from seriously-ill children and adults.

“The report is very clear in that the expert group do not believe it would be ethical or just to list some illnesses that entitle you to a medical card or those that don’t,” Mr Varadkar said.
