Jason Rossborough, aged 43, with an address at an apartment on Lower Glanmire Road, Cork, further claimed he had not been drunk and did nothing wrong. He contested a case against him at Cork District Court for being drunk and a source of danger to himself or others.

Answering his solicitor Eddie Burke, the defendant said he did nothing to merit the treatment he described at The Old Oak on Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork.

“I was perfectly natural, the way you would expect someone to be in the bar. This was an extreme sort of thing. I am 43 and I never had a problem with violence before, drunk or sober.

“I had left down my bag and jacket and could not find it. I had to tippy-toe up to (a shelf, looking for his stuff) but I did topple ever so slightly but that was a natural thing.

“He might have been suspicious I might have been casing the place looking for something to steal but I was just looking for my bag and jacket.

“They (security men) put their hands on my elbows and pushed me forward. I had not done anything to draw this on me. There was no reason for this. They pushed me and dragged me like I was hog-tied. I remember having my face pressed down on the floor. He has my arm up behind my back hurting me, shouting ‘relax, calm down’.”

Garda Darren Cahalane said he arrived on the scene and found staff of the premises holding the defendant down on the floor. The gardaí advised security to leave Rossborough go.

The garda said he spoke to Rossborough and found the man’s speech slurred as well as being unsteady on his feet. He formed the opinion the man was drunk and a danger to himself or others.

Garda Cahalane said the defendant made some allegations about being assaulted but did not proceed with a complaint after viewing CCTV in the presence of the officer at a later date.

Judge Leo Malone convicted Rossborough of being drunk and a danger, and imposed a fine of €350.
