Students get to dine on hot meals for €3 in LIT
The Green Rooms dining space at Limerick Instititue of Technology follows a €750,000 investment at the college.
The LIT subsidised dining space will ensure that students get at least one nutritious meal each day for less than half the price of a regular fast-food option.
Over the course of the academic year, it’s predicted this could save them a minimum of €320.
Speaking at the launch, college president Maria Hinfelaar said the Green Rooms — part of a €200m master plan for the college — is in keeping with LIT’s philosophy of putting the student experience at its centre.
Dr Hinfelaar said it was also an example of how the college could maximise on its limited space.
“Until we can press ahead with much needed expansion, we have to adapt and maximise how we use existing space,” she said. “We are severely restricted in terms of capacity as we have a main campus that was built for 2,000 students and accommodates 4,000.
“From a local industry perspective, the recent major job announcements in Limerick by Ettikon, Regeneron, Vistakon, and Analog Devices underline the increasing demand for skills and, therefore, the need for expansion of LIT.”
LIT will next week welcome 1,700 new students in first year, as well as new international students and post-graduates.
Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan, along with Dr Hinfelaar, addressed staff at the institute yesterday morning to launch the academic year and visited the Green Rooms, where she served a number of students breakfast.
Afterwards, she said: “I commend LIT on this initiative, not just because it is so important for student experience that they get healthy and affordable food but this is really an excellent and creative use of space as they have transformed it into a learning environment also.”
The €200m LIT Campus 2030 Masterplan ‘Our Places’ envisages an additional 50,000 square metres of space.
