Matchmaker Willie hopes for bumper wedding year

Lisdoonvarna matchmaker Willie Daly is expecting a ‘bumper year’ for weddings among those attending the annual Lisdoonvarna matchmaking festival opening this weekend.

Matchmaker Willie hopes for bumper wedding year

Matchmaking “for near on 50 years”, Willie said yesterday that the conditions are right for a bumper year for weddings for those looking for love at the festival “after a bumper harvest year for farmers”.

The month-long festival gets under way this weekend and is billed as Europe’s largest singles festival.

Willie said yesterday: “It has been a very good summer in the fields with the harvesting and the farmers can prepare for the festival in comfort. A good harvest year always makes for a festival that produces quite a few weddings.”

The north Clare farmer said that women are due to come in good numbers from overseas to meet Irish farmers at the festival.

He said: “There is quite an interest in the Irish male. He is a very pure kind of person — maybe it is living on an island — but that is a scarce enough commodity in the world right now.

He added: “The Irish male also has a nice philosophy on life and that makes the Irish male very attractive to women from across the world.”

He will be spending the next month in the town making entries into his fabled matchmaking book.

He said: “The book is a little bit shook looking at the moment, but it is a very lucky book and if you grasp it with both hands there is a good chance that you could be married in six months. The book is an inspiration for people.”

Willie said: “There is a magic here for the month and you have the first dancing starting at midday everyday and it goes onto the small hours of the following morning.”

Willie said that the gay matching festival held on the first weekend of last year’s festival “was a great success”. “My services weren’t asked for and I was quietly relieved in a way because I have never made any matches for gay people before.”

Mr Daly said the matchmaking festival for the gay community, entitled ‘The Outing’ will take place over the first weekend in October this year.
